A simple everyday gratin that doesn't require much effort yet yields a perfectly decent result.

My idea here was to make a very simple pasta bake or casserole using the Falukorv I had just found at a bargain price. I settled on this creation, which I thought turned out really well and requires minimal effort and ingredients. Basically, you just need to boil the pasta, mix in the other ingredients, and then let everything bake in the oven for a while.

It makes for a fairly mild casserole that I suspect works well for the younger members of the family, though personally, I prefer a bit more flavor. I’ve tried a few different things to boost the taste:

  • Added miso paste. It worked, but the miso flavor was a bit too pronounced; I didn't feel it worked well with the cream cheese.
  • Added a crumbled bouillon cube. This worked better as it added more flavor, but not enough to overpower the garlic and herbs.
  • Added "crispy chili" in oil (last image). I thought this worked really well - it provided a distinct flavor that complemented the garlic and herbs in the cream cheese nicely.

I can also imagine (even though I haven't tried it) that frying the falukorv in butter first would turn out well, but that creates a bit more washing-up, so I skip it entirely.

Overall, I was pleased with the balance between effort and results here. Not too much work, yet a tasty casserole nonetheless. And serving it doesn't require much fuss either - just place the casserole on the table and perhaps dress it up with a little chopped parsley if you like.

As always with oven-baked dishes, individual ovens can vary significantly, so cooking times may differ. In my oven, it took 25 minutes to get the result I was looking for, but as I said - that can vary.

Any leftovers make great packed lunches for the next day, but avoid the freezer. Frozen pasta doesn't turn out particularly well...
