Autumn is here, and the plum tree outside my window is laden with fruit ready for picking. I’m not sure what variety they are, but they are smaller than the ones you buy in the store. However, the pits are roughly the same size—meaning they account for a larger proportion of the total weight—so I use a slightly larger quantity of plums than called for in other recipes I’ve found online. My plums are both sweet and slightly tart, and I was quite pleased with the final result.
I use a slow cooker for this recipe, which works really well—you can simply dump all the ingredients in and wait for everything to cook. I also choose to clean the plums but leave the pits in, as they are a bit tricky to remove beforehand. In my opinion, it’s much easier to let everything heat up and then strain out the pits later.
This is my first attempt at making plum sauce, and I’ve opted for a few Asian ingredients suggested by various online recipes. I wanted to use a lighter soy sauce, but I only had a dark one at home, so the plum sauce turned out fairly dark in color.
